By the Organising Team of the Festival for Water and Common Goods
The Festival for Water and Common Goods is organised collectively through horizontal and open processes. 43 Social, environmental and trade union collectives with a social character participate in and support the Festival. The Press Release created by the Festival’s organising team includes an invitation to the Festival and a call for connection among common struggles around water and commons. It is the first time it will take place, aiming to resist the privatisation of water and sensitise people around current socio-ecological issues on water, common goods, different struggles and alliances.

In today’s reality, common goods and social rights such as electricity, public transport, waste management, health, education, public spaces, the sea, forests and even water are handed over to private companies. The memorandum governments have twice handed over EΥDAP (water company of Athens)and EΥATH (water company of Thessaloniki) to private funds for servicing the country’s public debt (TAIPED, Superfund). However, the citizens’ and workers’ movement managed to obtain repeated decisions of the Council of State that declared every attempt at privatisation by the governments of the day unconstitutional.
But the current government insists. It has put water under the newly expanded Water Resources Regulatory Authority (WRRA) and thus paved the way for this social good to be treated as a commodity. Privatisation of water, in other words, through the back door. Moreover, it allows the phenomenon of water scarcity, exacerbated by mismanagement, to spread throughout Greece without taking timely and effective measures to address it. So that at some point when the problem becomes intense and pressing, private capital will come to our rescue, with no compensation, of course. For this reason, a new petition has been filed with the Council of State (CoE), this time for the annulment of the new water pricing regulation. A large number of people, unions, associations and organisations stood outside the CoE, clearly stating that water is and will remain a public good!
For all the above, a number of environmental, movement and trade union collectives decided to join forces and resist. In this direction, we are organising the first “Festival for Water and Common Goods” at Protomagias Square (May 23 and 24) with the participation of all the associations that share our concerns and concerns.
The aim of the festival, through events and open debates, is to plan the joint resistance of the movements to all efforts to privatise water or manage water resources for profit rather than for public interest and environmental protection. We also wish to give the environmental and social rights movements the opportunity to present and discuss their demands and struggles.
Of course, music could not be absent from such a festival, so the programme will also be accompanied by artists and musicians to have fun collectively!
So we are waiting for you, all of you, on 23 and 24 May 2025 at the “Festival for Water and Common Goods” at the Field of Areos (Protomagias Square)!
Because the struggle for the protection of water and all public goods is everyone’s business!
